Artisan Cider made in the New Forest
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The New Forest National Park is home to many things, beautiful landscapes, free roaming animals and many artisan products. Dickies Dribble and Harrow Wood Farm cider being one of the newer artisan products to come onto the market. Harrow Wood Farm is situated in the village of Bransgore and set in 100 acres of mixed farmland and woodland with a small touring caravan site. The soils are very poor and consist of gravel over clay so crops are either slow to grow or need high inputs of fertiliser. However luckily for us, apple trees seem to thrive!
Our orchard is teeming with wildlife, as the way it should be in order to produce good quality sustainable cider. We have a number of bee hives which contain our most valued workers to help pollinate our trees and do our bit for conservation. Our farm is also home to a number of rare invertebrates. This has now been recognised by our Gold David Bellamy Conservation award.
We strive to keep our business family run to keep us as committed as possible to producing the best quality cider. The cider making and sales are run by Dickie & his daughter Emma; both passionate about squeezing as much juice as possible into the cider and keeping it all about the apples.
About Dickie
Having always been one for crazy challenges, Five years ago over a cider fuelled chat with his friend at the rugby, Dickie set himself a new challenge of turning his skills (& pension fund) into a successful cider business.
After purchasing some books (with lots of pictures!), converting a barn and 800 apple trees later the trial and error process began. It didn't take him long to get the hang of it - after all how hard could it be to just extract juice from slightly rotten apples?! After extensive testing (tasting!) he hit the jackpot with his blending recipe!
Dickie can more than often be found inventing new gadgets, tending to his trees or locked away in the cider barn (man cave) like a true mad scientist.
